Board meeting of SOS, HG school March 2017

Board members of SOS Herman Gmeiner school,
Ayesha Najeeb, Hania Shahid, Fariha Munir, Ms. Samina Bucha, Rubina Arshad, Mahnaz Fareed, Rameen Anees

Another Executive Board meeting of SOS Herman Gmeiner school took place on 4th of March, at the school. The special feature of this meeting was presence of Mrs. Samina Buccha. An extremely occupied and committed educationist, who specially spared her time to attend this meeting. Rameen Anees, Haniya Shahid, Ayesha Najeeb, Fariha Munir and Rubina Arshad were also present at the occasion. All the teachers and other staff members, alongwith the head mistress, were there too.

Meetings at SOS village and school are serious business. Files are prepared for all the executive board members, complete with agendas to discuss. Each and every point is discussed in detail.
Attendees have to mark their attendance. Budgeting is done, plans are finalised. In short, no time is wasted. Being the chair person of all SOS projects, Mahnaz Fareed Sheikh proves her best. She remains gentle, yet strictly follows the discipline. If it was some other group of ladies, they would have spent most of the time of meeting in gossiping but not in the presence of Mahnaz Fareed. Even if members derail from the point, Mahnaz makes sure to take the discussion back to relevance.

And as usual, more good news was there to share. After establishment of Rosetta Stone lab for the students and teachers (which remains one of its kind in the city of saints). Two new 'firsts' are introduced at this school:

1) SOS Herman school now has a psychologist to help the children: To ensure the mental health of its children, it is a major requirement of SOS villages to acquire the services of psychologists. The chairperson, Mahnaz had a realisation that the children at HG school also hail from the same underprivileged and problematic background as those from SOS village. They also require the same kind of care. So, she assigned the task to the psychologist already available at SOS village.

It is indeed, a great step forward. Specially, when looked at other institutions. Even the best schools in Multan do not have this facility at their hand. We congratulate HG school for this innovation.

2) Free Samsung tablets will be provided in the class rooms, with interactive smart board: Tabs are no longer the property of rich. Children of HG school will now have their hands on these high tech tablets from the renowned Samsung company. Not just that, but also fully computerised interactive smart board will be available in the classroom too. Teachers will be provided proper training to use and apply it in their teaching methods.

It is surprising that children from such underprivileged backgrounds are being exposed to such technology. This opportunity is because of the efforts of Mahnaz Fareed Sheikh. Who not only works relentlessly towards providing the very best to the most deprived in the society but has also build an honest environment of trust and transparency that people trust completely. FarihaMunirShahTimes already has justly titled her 'the mother Teresa of Multan'.

We congratulate all the students, their parents, staff and all those with Herman Gmeiner school Multan, that they now have access to everything, still unimaginable to many. And once again salute the services of all those associated with the noble cause of SOS. God bless you all!

M.G.M. Swimming pool.

View of the domes of MGM bulding from inside the pool. The crystal clear blue water. Chairs lined up for the spectators. Little pool for the toddlers. Summer is finally here, although, the weather still turns unpredictable at times. But still, one feels like taking a dip in the cool, cool water of a crystal clear pool.  M.G.M (Multan Garrison Mess. Commonly known among  Multanis, by its' old name 'services club'), opens up, pool doors for all its' members every 15th of April. The pool is open air, so it works on seasonal basis. From April to September/ October (if weather allows it).  Last year, the pool remained open, only till May, after that, it was shut down for renovations & could not be reopened because of the 'dengue' scare. MGM pool has always been, undoubtedly the biggest & the best in this city, with an excellent filtration plant to boast & an extremely dedicated team of military men as workers, for maintaining th...

Annual debates at SOS Herman Gmeiner school

Glimpses from the event When you first visit SOS Herman Gmeiner school Multan, you are amazed by its majestic architectural design, beautifully decorated class rooms, functional libraries, meticulously pruned playgrounds, clean walkways and glistening environment. You look at the well mannered, disciplined, full of smiles students, extremely efficient staff members, all this makes you believe that this must be a high end school. To be honest, it is equally great in all its standards. Rather better in some, as they have Rosetta Stone library, through its audio/video English learning methods, children of this school have acquired exceptional accents and perfect pronunciations. Each student has access to laptop in computer class, their teachers use smartboard alongwith blackboard. Even their teachers are assessed and guided with the help of executive committee members. There is a subject of  'general knowledge', which is based on the colorful books in their library, it requires th...

Leading lady of Multan Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar

Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar is a name synonymous with women empowerment in entire South Punjab. She is a living proof of the saying, 'empowered women, empower other women'. She became a member of Majlis-e-shurra of Pakistan and served at that position from 1982 to 1985 and dedicated herself for the betterment of underprivileged women of South Punjab.  Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar was fully aware of the talents of the women of this area and knew how their skills were exploited at home and at work. She was determined to uplift and raise their standards of living, through education and trainings. She was among first people to ever demand a separate university for the girls of Multan and remained persistent about it. Finally, it bore fruit, three decades later, in form of women's university Multan.  Not just education, but she has worked for the social and economic empowerment of the women too. She is the president of Ladies club Multan. A social platform, which exists fo...
