Annual debates at SOS Herman Gmeiner school

Glimpses from the event

When you first visit SOS Herman Gmeiner school Multan, you are amazed by its majestic architectural design, beautifully decorated class rooms, functional libraries, meticulously pruned playgrounds, clean walkways and glistening environment. You look at the well mannered, disciplined, full of smiles students, extremely efficient staff members, all this makes you believe that this must be a high end school.

To be honest, it is equally great in all its standards. Rather better in some, as they have Rosetta Stone library, through its audio/video English learning methods, children of this school have acquired exceptional accents and perfect pronunciations. Each student has access to laptop in computer class, their teachers use smartboard alongwith blackboard. Even their teachers are assessed and guided with the help of executive committee members. There is a subject of  'general knowledge', which is based on the colorful books in their library, it requires the students and teachers to explore those books.

Despite boasting all this, this school runs on a non-profit generation basis, with a minimum fee, starting at few hundreds on monthly basis, which includes provision of books, free of charge. The aim of this school is t
o equip the neglected children of poverty-stricken backgrounds to face the competitive world of today with the weapon of education in their hands. SOS Hermann Gmeiner School Multan is not only providing quality education to the orphans and abandoned children of SOS Children's Village but it is also ensuring high standard of education for the neglected and remote communities.

Another great feature of SOS Hermam Gmeiner school, which places it on a pedestal higher than other institutions, is their 'annual debates competition'. Which started as an internal school activity, but exceptional performance by the students of SOS Herman Gmeiner school and children of SOS village, compelled Mahnaz Fareed Sheikh , the head of all SOS projects in Multan, to bring all the big branded names in school businesses to SOS HG school and prove to her own students, how extra ordinary they have become, through this institution. That SOS HG students are not less than the elite schools. To prove, great wealth does not guarantee good education, but only hard work, determination and dedication of students and teachers, work wonders.

The beginning of 2024, brought the arrival of this competition on a cold, foggy morning of 13th January, but the atmosphere turned warm, with sense of competition among nine contesting schools.

1. Beaconhouse school system Multan (all branches) 2. Beaconhouse college program Multan.
3. Multan Public School and college.
4. Lahore Grammar School Multan.
5. Kids kampus/SICAS DHA Multan.
6. Beaconhouse Newlands Multan. 7. Bloomfield hall school Multan. 8. Jinnah Highs school Multan. and as they say, save the best for last. 9. SOS Herman Gmeiner school Multan. Judges for debates were, Mr. Khwaja Abdul Haq the director Mahmood textile mills and founder of Enlightened Multan,
Mr. Furqan Balouch and Ms. Shazia Mehboob.
Remember, these annual debates also serve as annual function. There are also science/art projects, designed, created and displayed by the students. Judges for these projects were, Mrs. Mahwish Abdul Haq (co founder of Enlightened Multan and the most popular food blogger of the city of saints and co-admin of 'foodies of Multan', Mr. Taimoor Durrani (Famous as Tee Durrani). The creativity and innovation involved in these projects left the attendees in awe of the excellence of this school.
Inorder to accommodate so many participants, the entertainment was kept limited to two recitals only. Beautifully performed by the female students of SOS HG school. Rest of the time was dedicated to fiery debates between the students of all participating schools. Children of SOS HG school outdid everyone and acquired maximum prizes and therefore declared winner of the ' Golden trophy'. Whereas, Beaconhouse stood second and Bloomfield hall third. There was also an adult team as well, based on the executive committee members, which included the names of Saira Nasir, Asifa Tareen principal Beaconhouse school), Fariha Munir Shah, lead by Mahnaz Fareed Sheikh. Although they had come out as winners in the previous contests but this time, the students defeated them and believe it, nothing could have been more awarding for these ladies, than seeing these children succeed over them.
At the end, all the executive committee members were invited one by one to present shields to the judges and the judges were requested to present awards and medals to the winners. Judges also announced the results and addressed the gathering. All of them expressed their amazement at remarkable performance of students of SOS HG school and also how impressed they are to see this school and its high standards.
At the end, a high tea was served for the guests and the guests mingled with the students and staff members, who explained to them the functioning of the projects and the school.
Congratulations to team SOS, students and staff members of SOS Herman Gmeiner school for arranging yet another brilliant event and also congratulations to Mrs. Mahnaz Fareed Sheikh , the visionary behind every successful SOS project in Multan. The school and all these projects are a success because of her capable leadership skills. SOS is her passion, her life a complete dedication to this cause and she is not less than mother Teresa for all these children at this school and SOS village. We wish them all the very best of luck in life.

View of the domes of MGM bulding from inside the pool. The crystal clear blue water. Chairs lined up for the spectators. Little pool for the toddlers. Summer is finally here, although, the weather still turns unpredictable at times. But still, one feels like taking a dip in the cool, cool water of a crystal clear pool.  M.G.M (Multan Garrison Mess. Commonly known among  Multanis, by its' old name 'services club'), opens up, pool doors for all its' members every 15th of April. The pool is open air, so it works on seasonal basis. From April to September/ October (if weather allows it).  Last year, the pool remained open, only till May, after that, it was shut down for renovations & could not be reopened because of the 'dengue' scare. MGM pool has always been, undoubtedly the biggest & the best in this city, with an excellent filtration plant to boast & an extremely dedicated team of military men as workers, for maintaining th

Leading lady of Multan Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar

Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar is a name synonymous with women empowerment in entire South Punjab. She is a living proof of the saying, 'empowered women, empower other women'. She became a member of Majlis-e-shurra of Pakistan and served at that position from 1982 to 1985 and dedicated herself for the betterment of underprivileged women of South Punjab.  Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar was fully aware of the talents of the women of this area and knew how their skills were exploited at home and at work. She was determined to uplift and raise their standards of living, through education and trainings. She was among first people to ever demand a separate university for the girls of Multan and remained persistent about it. Finally, it bore fruit, three decades later, in form of women's university Multan.  Not just education, but she has worked for the social and economic empowerment of the women too.
