The ladies club, Multan, is one classic place, where one can find living legends & pioneers of women's social life, in this city. When there were no 'kitty or committee parties', no other way of socializing, there was this 'ladies club', where women from (more or less) aristocratic background would gather together, all dressed up in high style and fashion. And indulge in creative activities, along with gossiping. This particular ladies club,  situated at Bagh Langhay Khan, is more than 53 years old and still, few of the members who actually laid the foundation stone of this prestigious institute as pioneers are an inseparable part of it. Generations through generations, members brought their daughters & daughters in law. So, it creates an interesting combination of past & the present.
This month ( April), the turn for arranging the party was of renowned educationist, Mrs. Jameeda Malik & her group members, which included Mrs. Safia Riaz Qureshi, Mrs. Qallab-e-Abbass Naqvi, Mrs. Hania Shahid. & there were other members too, but apologize the lousy memory of the writer, can't remember rest of the names.
Anyway, todays' event was 'Salad making competition' & a lecture on Cancer by H.O.D of Cancer department at Nishtar hospital, Multan, Dr. Ejaz Masood Bhatti. The interesting part here is, Dr. Bhatti's mother, remained member of this club, till the end of her life. & he also mentioned, he clearly remembered, that he participated in a musical chair as a child in 1971. It was an hour long lecture, made easy for the ladies, the crux of which was, Cancer is curable & preventable. & women must check themselves for 'breast cancer'.
Then came the turn of Dr. Amna Awan, who also shared some valuable information on the subject. & later Mrs. Nuzhat Javed, threw some light on the importance of vegetables in our daily life.
The chief guest today, was none other than, the beautiful, vivacious, principal of 'Beaconhouse Multan', Mrs. Assiya Khurram Agha, whose husband happens to be the present commissioner of this city also. But the lady is so down to earth , sweet & humble in nature that she is always hesitant & reluctant to accept, whenever, she is invited as chief guest somewhere. But Hania Shahid managed to coax her for performing this task.
Finally, the prize distribution ceremony took place. All those who spoke & all those who participated in salad making competition were awarded token of thanks.
The judges were two lecturers from Govt.girls college. Although, they claimed to be impartial but except for the 1st prize, rest of the prizes were awarded, either to the lecturers or to their relatives. Hey!! Don't take it seriously, just creating room for controversy.
Finally, Mrs. Shagufta Khaksar, who is the present 'program secretary' of the club & Mrs, Tahira Najam, who is the media co-ordinator of the club, announced the future group plans & thanked everybody. Specially me, because, the writer of this blog is also 'the joint secretary' of this ladies club, from year 1998, if am not forgetting & also served as program secretary, from 1996 till 2009.
Scrumptious dinner was served, along with the salads brought in by the participants & thats what brought this evening to the end.

M.G.M. Swimming pool.

View of the domes of MGM bulding from inside the pool. The crystal clear blue water. Chairs lined up for the spectators. Little pool for the toddlers. Summer is finally here, although, the weather still turns unpredictable at times. But still, one feels like taking a dip in the cool, cool water of a crystal clear pool.  M.G.M (Multan Garrison Mess. Commonly known among  Multanis, by its' old name 'services club'), opens up, pool doors for all its' members every 15th of April. The pool is open air, so it works on seasonal basis. From April to September/ October (if weather allows it).  Last year, the pool remained open, only till May, after that, it was shut down for renovations & could not be reopened because of the 'dengue' scare. MGM pool has always been, undoubtedly the biggest & the best in this city, with an excellent filtration plant to boast & an extremely dedicated team of military men as workers, for maintaining th...

Leading lady of Multan Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar

Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar is a name synonymous with women empowerment in entire South Punjab. She is a living proof of the saying, 'empowered women, empower other women'. She became a member of Majlis-e-shurra of Pakistan and served at that position from 1982 to 1985 and dedicated herself for the betterment of underprivileged women of South Punjab.  Mrs. Farrukh Mukhtar was fully aware of the talents of the women of this area and knew how their skills were exploited at home and at work. She was determined to uplift and raise their standards of living, through education and trainings. She was among first people to ever demand a separate university for the girls of Multan and remained persistent about it. Finally, it bore fruit, three decades later, in form of women's university Multan.  Not just education, but she has worked for the social and economic empowerment of the women too. She is the president of Ladies club Multan. A social platform, which exists fo...

Celebration of Saraiki culture

Uzma Burana hosting her show Multan is one of the few places on earth, where Saraiki is regarded a native language.  As this city is considered a parallel civilization to Rome; Saraiki is often compared to French language in sweetness, softness and beauty. It has a strange poetic quality about it. This language is widely spoken in entire South of Punjab and at the bordering areas in Sindh, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtoonkhwah. Richness of Saraiki heritage and culture can flabbergast those, who are unaware of it. Vibrance of colours, ethnic touch, elegance wrapped in austerity, these characteristics truly elevate Saraiki handicrafts from rest of the world. Here, everything can be hand embroidered. Apparel, shoes, beddings, wall hangings, table to foot mats. You name it and Saraiki people would present to you an article dripping with colour, shimmer and originality. Artefacts made of camel skin, mirror work, miniatures, paintings, mosaic. Truly hand made, from beginni...
